Though having fun on a go kart can be a great pastime, it can also be a dangerous one if you're not careful. By bearing in mind a few safety tips, you can enjoy a thrilling experience that does not end in injury.
Clothing
Don’t make the mistake of assuming that you can use a go kart as you would a regular car as it doesn’t provide similar protection. Always wear a helmet and protective overalls when operating the vehicle; the latter must be loose enough to prevent any restricted movement without being excessively baggy. Wearing gloves is a good idea to allow you to maintain a good grip of the steering wheel without needing to hold it too tightly as this can cause pain to the fingers and wrists.
To be able to feel the pedals properly, wear thin-soled trainers that fit properly and are laced correctly. Avoid any loose accessories that could be at risk of getting caught in any moving parts. Tie back any long hair.
Tires
Before driving the go kart, check the tires to make sure that they are all the correct pressure and that none have sustained any damage. The kart can become unstable in the event that the tires are damaged, overly-worn or have been filled to an incorrect pressure.
Pay Attention
It can be very easy to get caught up in the excitement of driving around a track, especially with adrenalin making your decisions for you. Keep your wits about you and make sure that you are aware of the other drivers around you as well as any visual or audio signals that are in place. Pay attention to everything that you are told by staff and abide by any rules that you are given.
If anything unusual happens whilst the go kart is in motion, such as the appearance of smoke or an unusual sound, do not overlook it but move yourself to a safe location and find someone to assist you.
Track
If possible, take the time to familiarize yourself with the track by walking around it before getting into the go kart. Mentally note the bends and the safety barriers so that you know what to expect when you get behind the wheel. If you are on the track and a problem occurs that prevents the kart from going further, rather than remain seated in the kart, move to a safe position which does not involve crossing the track; remain behind a safety barrier and attempt to attract the attention of a member of staff.
Inspection
Go over the kart to thoroughly examine it and check for any damage that it may have previously sustained. Look for signs of wear and for anything that appears out of place. Check the fuel cap to ensure that it has no faults and is tightly screwed into place. Once this has been checked, turn on the ignition to ensure that the engine does not produce any unusual noises knocks or vibrations.
